BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma In Animal Management (2 year)

Overview

 

This course is designed for students who want to start a career in the animal care industry. It is ideal for students who are intending to progress directly to employment or to an apprenticeship in animal care vocations. This qualification has been made with the involvement of higher educational representatives to ensure it supports progression to higher study. Students will work with a range of farm livestock, companion animals, exotic animals, zoo animals and British wildlife to prepare them for sector specialist areas.

How will I learn/course delivery?

Students will have access to a purpose built small holding situated on site to allow hands on experience with a range of species. Students will have a mixture of theory based and practical based learning throughout the year.

Woodpecker Court and BTEC encourage the inclusion of employer engagement throughout the year and will aim to involve external animal related industries within the delivery of the course.

 

What will I learn?

Students will cover a range of topics within different industry related units. There will be elements of practical and theory based learning throughout the year.

Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Animal Management: This course consists of 15 units.

  • - Animal Breeding and Genetics

  • - Animal Welfare and Ethics

  • - Practical Animal Husbandry

  • - Animal Behaviour

  • - Animal Health and Diseases

  • - Work Experience in the Land based sector

  • - Investigative Research Project

  • - Aquatic Animal Health and Husbandry

  • - Exotic Animal Husbandry

  • - Farm Livestock Husbandry

  • - Human and Animal Interaction

  • - Practical Estate Planning, Construction and Maintenance

  • - Zoological Animal Health and Husbandry

  • - Animals in boarding establishments

Both Courses have a mandatory work experience requirement included which will need to be completed at an external placement. The animal care work placement unit requires learners to spend a specific number of hours with an employer in the animal sector. Woodpecker Court will aim to support in getting the work placements for students enrolled on the course.

Level 3 National Extended Diploma: 300 hours

Course Entry Requirement 

- Level 2 functional skills or GCSE grade 4-9 in English and Maths

- 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 or Level 2 BTEC qualification

​

Method Of Assessment

Students will be assessed in a variety of assessment types suited to the vocational sector. There is a mix of internal and external assessment methods used within the course.

​

This course is primarily designed to support progression to employment. Student upon completing this course could access entry-level roles in areas such as:

· Kennels/ Catteries

· Animal care roles within animal based charities

· Animal training assistants

· Animal technicians
